Removing Permanent Marker on Gloss Fingerboard on a Morrell Pro????

Post by Doug Anderson »

I got a crazy deal on an 8 string Joe Morrell Pro which has a "gloss fingerboard" according to the Morrell website.

The previous owner labeled the frets with black permanent marker. I would like to clean those off without damaging the finish. What product would be safe and effective????

Thank you! Doug

I would try Goo Gone (citrus based) cleaner first. I've had good luck removing Sharpie marker with it. Next up would be naptha. The Morrell probably has a poly finish which the alcohol will not interact with, but I'd try the other two first.

Be very cautious with alcohol, I have damaged finishes with it. Soap and water on a rag could be all you need, or simple green.

I agree. Put some on a "Q"-tip and use a light circular motion. Don't press hard, the alcohol will do the work. Maybe try a little bit on an inconspicuous spot. I have used it on acrylic and also on lexan, with no problems. Don't saturate the Q tip, so that it runs on to the wood body, whatever the finish on the body is, it might not tolerate the alcohol. I am assuming the FB is some sort of plastic? If it is a finish on wood, I will retract my previous advice on the alcohol. I have also used this stuff called Novus 2 fine scratch remover on an eraser, the pink ones like we had in grade school. That stuff works very well.

I used it on a nitro finished guitar to remove Sharpie and it worked well, no problem

Alcohol CAN soften a nitro finish. Not as drastically as acetone or thinners but still noticable if you leave it on too long. I use Naptha.

Auto body pre-clean. Have your local mobile glass or body shop squirt a little bit in a plastic pop/water bottle. Don't take much. Just rinse off with a little water afterwards.

Tell me you're old school without telling me you're old school. lol.

I haven't heard someone refer to soda as "pop" in years.

It's nice to hear the old words. Reminds me of the conversations I'd hear my dad have with his friends.
Aloha,

Ha! Old school is right! Old everything! Actually pop is a midwestern term that I gradutated toward in recent years, we were more like south central hillbilly and used the word coke or soft drink for evey type of soda.

Before that, in my neck of the woods, folks would call it dope. [Actually coca cola in the early days did contain a little bit of cocaine.]
An old conversation from my Granpa went like this at the local fair.

"I'm going to get me a poke of caps and a dope."

Translated, bag of popcorn and a Coke.
.....now back to the show.....
